The man-in-suit method, in concert with elaborate miniature work, pyrotechnics, wire work, and other special effects techniques, proved to be an innovation by Toho effects master Eiji Tsuburaya, and it ushered in a new and uniquely Japanese genre, kaiju eiga (“monster movie”).
